Healing Items & Instaces | Party Playing vs Solo Playing

Question

Hello,

I just found out that all healing items are disabled when running instances. I know that some servers do this customization to promote party playing; however, I believe this system has some flaws.

  • Some users don't have the time to play at peak-hours making it really hard for them to party.
  • Some people like playing solo because they can stop in the middle of the run to do something else in real-life. In the end we are creature of routines, and the way I do my instances is not the same way people do theirs.
  • Why force people to party playing every single instance when there are really hard instances that can't be solo? What about the solo-only-instances? 

 

Instead, I would recommend the following to promote party playing:

  • Enable party quest and looting system. I believe this is enabled with MVPs already, but making it global will help people create more parties to farm together for quests and so on.
  • Code Hard-Mode instances (all that needs to be done is improve the mob-attack/hp etc. and Increase the drop rates), so that people can find it more appealing to party playing ( at least they are not being forced, but rather encouraged to partying because of the rewards). The harder the instance the higher the reward; do this and people will die to party. 
  • Finally, enable all healing items. People play this game to have the freedom to solo as well. In the end, we will always have those hard instances that will required a party, but Ghost Palace, Airship, and Room of Consciousness, for example, are jokes to party play.

Overall answer:

Instances are either or single or party based, and have been specifically designed for either purpose.
Our overall server customizations already make lots of things ten-fold+ easier than on official, so disabling healing items is absolutely intended for balancing purposes, not "solely" to force you to party up.

 

Zeny, and thus healing items are way easier to get your hands on -> and spamming F1 for healing pots just for the sake of solo-ing something that's not supposed to be solo'ed isn't what we want.

Party-based instances are designed for parties, that's about it.
It is absolutely NOT in our interest to encourage solo-ing them, doesn't matter if you're having issues to find a party or not.
 

We offer the "lfg" channel on discord if you're seeking a group, and you also got the chance to use the global chat function ingame for callouts.
On top of that, it's always great to bring in your friends, which is in both, your personal and the server's interest.

 

To get into more detail about your suggestions/feedback:

1. Not playing during peak times isn't helpful indeed, but there's always a way to manage it somehow.

 

2. Why would you start an instance if you don't plan finishing it in the first place? If you want to run Endless Tower just for specific MVP farming, try to find a team who's up for the same task. I personaly think it's much more worth it to simply finish it in the first place, but that's up to you. You're way faster in a party anyways, so you're always saving up on time on top of that. Otherwise tell them beforehand that you're planning to leave at some point, for whatever reason that might be. We're humans after all and should be able to discuss your intentions.

 

3. Yet again: -> Play solo instances if you're up for that. Party instances are NOT meant to be played solo, it's not "too hard to solo" you're simply trying to re-purpose party instances.


4. Don't know exactly what you mean with "Enable party quest and looting system" ?
    Please note that our custom treasure loot system for bosses are specifically designed for big boss fights. We cannot apply it to normal monsters because it will affect them in any case globaly, also outside of instances. Also, it's a very ressource-heavy system which, yet again, has not been designed to be applied to fighting many mobs at the same time. Killing 20 enemies at once would just fill the entire room with NPC chests all over the place and might possibly break the damage tracking system.
Since the main interest about instances are boss drops, and those already support individual looting... i don't see how we could further improve on that (at least for now).

 

5. Each single instance went through testing and balancing before their initial release. It's not an easy task due to our vast customizations and costs lots of time. There are hard-mode instances, and instances which are harder by nature as designed by the official game, korean ragnarok online. We will release them in the future, which will bring new challenges along with them.
Re-balancing and/or implementing custom hard modes for existing instances would take up months of work and isn't planned at all. However official instances will always find their way into the game at some point.

 

6. As mentioned before, no, we have no plans on enabling healing items. You're already claiming that they're a joke to play, so why should we enable healing items in the first place? It would just make them even easier. Please note that some instances are designed for lower-level players on official servers, so they have their specific purpose. Since in gRO leveling up 5000 times faster, you most likely start visiting those instances when you're already too powerful to fully enjoy them. So there are several difficulty levels by picking different instances already.


Conclusion:

There's lots of content that you can enjoy playing solo in the world of Ragnarok Online.
But Party instances are not part of it. /no1

 

We're still based on Ragnarok Online and want to keep the official playstyle as good as possible, while offering additional features that enhance gameplay.
It is not in our intention to fully customize every single bit that's out there. And honestly, we also don't have the resources to do just that.

I think a lot of this is good, but I would just like to point out a few things! Both good and bad.

 1. Ghost Palace, Room of Consciousness, and Geffen Magic Tournament are solo only, and Ghost Palace is the only one that you dont have access to healing effects in.
2. We do have party based loot so thats cool already! Less work if there was to be a change and it wouldnt hurt anyone.
3. Even right now, soloing instances is possible on almost any class through mercenary usage (except for Sealed Shrine which requires a Geneticist). Letting people use things like berries just makes it easier but its still there right now.
4. I dont think soloing instances is bad in general, but in the past when it was really mainstream and when I was still new to gRO it was literally impossible to find a party EVER even with the much higher population. Thats why I recruited my friends to try out RO for the first time with me. Nobody wanted to party even with shared loot because they just prefer to do it whenever they wanted and however they wanted (just like you). New players who are too weak wouldnt be able to do this and makes it much harder on them to get some of the instance gear like Temporal Boots, or Gigant Snakeskins.
5. Hard mode instances sounds neat but I think we would have to be careful about what we are raising drop rates of. Also maybe new cards? Could be cool
6. Whats the point of support classes when you have berries (even if they are a 5 second cooldown). Buffs? Some damage? Why bother when you would be better off as another class. Resurrection would almost never get used, tanks/melee classes have no reason to take GTB off so we are even further removing support classes impact and they would have no purpose to heal, so they only buff a few party members and do damage.

and theres probably some more stuff I havent thought of just yet.

Both sides have problems, but with that being said I personally would be okay with re-enabling healing items if for no other reason than to try it out and see what its like for everyone. Its been quite a few years and we have got some new things, so maybe it wouldnt be as bad now? I just have my doubts about it because most instances would turn into worldboss fights, where theres 8+ DPSers and a single tank wearing devilring+gtb using berries whenever they get low hp and nobody has to do anything clever or interesting like pulling Amdarais to the stairs to avoid mobs, or kiting Faceworm Queen around to avoid poison fields.

Fair enough @AceWindstorm and thank you for the reply. To update my statement, I concur with you that both sides have issues. 


I am a party player myself, in fact I come from a server that had the party system implemented, but I don’t have a lot of time available to play during the week right now. 

 

Also, my friends don’t want to play RO anymore, so I have to be alone most of the time, unfortunately. 
 

Perhaps something could be done to improve both sides?

Honestly, this is one of the best things about Ragnarok in my opinion, especially so here. Sometimes learning from other people about something COMPLETELY changes the way you think about the game and how you play. I have had it happen many times, especially back when healing items were disabled, it became more about "how can we as team AND individually get in a position to survive" instead of "lol eat 1 of my 3000 ygg berry/steel body sura eat ygg hit boss XD" and that totally changed the way me and my friends played the game. And even though we've never had a real support (sura had and still has some supportive abilities, occasionally we had one friend play gene), we were still able to work around things and get things done by compensating with things like the Pimp/Luxury Hats to revive allies or by switching up stat builds/cards. Even when we only played as a Ranger + RG duo we still could make things work, even in ET, once we got the right gears and cards from other places (solo or party).
